Greenpoint Terminal Gallery is pleased to present Face Off a group exhibition exploring contemporary approaches to portraiture. Historically, portrait paintings has primarily memorialized the rich and powerful but in the hands ofAnders Oinonen , Jennifer Sullivan, Melissa Brown, Susy Oliveira and Ryan Schneider the genre becomes a reflection on our population and less about a depiction of a singular person.
In Ryan Schneider’s Mask Not Cracking, a seductive women gazes into her reflection on the selfie mode of an I phone, her eyes doubling back at the viewer, entrancing us within her own vision.
Melissa Brown’s presents a self portrait of the artist in her studio, by including the mirror she uses to reflect her own self the work acts as double portrait; one can’t help feeling as a voyeur by watching the artist watch herself within the studio.

Susy Oliveira’s work combines photography, sculpture and collage, often sourcing images from vintage pornography found on line, Oliveira will manipulate the found image into sculpture, her works explore a representation of unattainable desire. Oilveira’s Man Seen by a Flower is a 10 time repeating image, shown 4 concurrent times within the same object, as the title suggests the man is being viewed by flora and not by us the human bystander. The repeating image pulsates with a heat and sexually that is reminiscent of its original source material.
Jennifer Sullivan’s paintings deal directly and indirectly with her experience of living within a female body. Mundane physical details from her life become symbolic of emotional states. In a series of recent self-portraits, the artist portrays herself eating salad alone or even becoming a salad - a surrealist and satirical embodiment of the pressures of being a woman searching to be her best self.
Anders Oinonen’s expressive faces are decadently painterly, electric brush strokes wrap the canvases in a lively dance of deep and bright colors. In these paintings the features that Oinonen depicts morph seamlessly between human and creature, creating a playful face that is familiar but also dreamlike.

Jennifer Sullivan is a New York-based artist working in painting, video, and performance. Solo exhibitions include Revenge Body at Five Car Garage, Los Angeles, CA (2016), House Cat at Arts + Leisure, New York, NY, (2015), Big Girl Paintings, Five Car Garage, Los Angeles, CA (2014), Adult Movie, Las Cienegas Projects, Los Angeles, CA (2011), and One-Week Walden, Freight + Volume, New York, NY (2010). Sullivan has also exhibited and performed in exhibitions at NADA NY, Marvin Gardens, Safe Gallery, Essex Flowers, Pablo's Birthday, 247365, Klaus Von Nichtsaggend, and the deCordova Museum. Awards include a fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center, and residencies at the Lighthouse Works, Skowhegan, Ox-Bow, and Yaddo. Her work has been reviewed in the NY Times, Brooklyn Rail, Artforum, and Art Papers, and her videos are included in the Geisel Library collection at the University of California in San Diego. She is represented by Five Car Garage in Los Angeles, CA.
Susy Oliveira is a Toronto based artist working in photography, sculpture and collage. Selected exhibitions include shows at Erin Stump Projects, Toronto; Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; SAW Gallery, Ottawa; Khyber, Halifax, and PLATFORM, Winnipeg.

Ryan Schneider was born in Indianapolis, IN and holds a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art. Recent solo shows include “No Filter Eden” at V1 Gallery, Copenhagen, “Mojave Masks” at The Schneider Museum of Art, Ashland, Oregon, and “You Are Entering” at Richard Heller Gallery, Los Angeles. Recent group exhibitions include “Hope and Hazard: A Comedy of Eros” curated by Eric Fischl at The Hall Art Foundation in Reading, VT, “Brask Meets Willumsen” at the JF Willimsens Museum, Denmark, and “Natural Selection” at The Hole, NYC. His work is held in public and private collections worldwide, and has been reviewed or featured in The New Yorker, Art in America, Modern Painters, The Brooklyn Rail, ArtInfo, Artsy, Kunsten.dk, and The Paris Review, among many other publications. Schneider lives and works in the wild desert of Joshua Tree, California.

Melissa Brown lives and works in New York City. She is a member of the artist-run gallery Essex Flowers and has mounted solo exhibitions most recently at Roberto Paradise, San Juan, Magenta Plains, New York and The Journal, Brooklyn. She has participated in group exhibitions at Mass MOCA, Canada, Gavin Brown's Enterprise, Klaus Von Nichtssagend and Musée International Des Arts Modestes. In 2012 she was awarded the Joan Mitchell Painter's Grant. Her show Between States at Derek Eller Gallery was reviewed by the New York Times.

Anders Oinonen received his MFA from the University of Waterloo, and graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. He is represented by Cooper Cole in Toronto. Solo exhibitions include Eyebrow Haircut at The Hole NYC, Phiz, Zagga Zow and People People at Cooper Cole, Toronto. Group exhibitions include Buying Friends, The Portman Collection at UICA in Grand Rapids, Storage Wars at Eric Firestone Gallery and Bobby Trap at The Hole NYC.
